She is a sociologist from the Universidad Católica de Chile, MA and PhD. in Sociology from the Columbia University. She is currently a professor in the Department of Sociology at Stanford University. She has specialized in social stratification and her research focuses on inequality and social mobility, educational disparities and the dynamics of marriage and family.
